![]() A Brief History Of US PGA Championship The USPGA championship is different from every other major as it has never allowed amateur golfers to compete. Played in August, it is the final major of the year, and boasts the strongest field in golf. But there has been more than one instance of the rank outsider winning the title. The first USPGA was held in 1916 - the same year the Professional Golfers Association of America was founded. New York salesman Rodman Wannamaker created the tournament and the winners' trophy is named after him. The competition began life as a matchplay event and was only switched to a strokeplay format in 1958. The first USPGA was held at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York and was won by a British-born golfer, Jim Barnes. However, there have not been too many European successes in the history of the event. The last came as far back as 1930, when Scotsman Tommy Armour lifted the trophy. Up until last year one of the most surprising results of all time was the victory by John Daly in 1991. He turned up to the event as a ninth reserve! But perhaps even topping that was Shaun Micheel in 2003 with a victory that no-one could have predicted. It was a different story during the 1920's, the USPGA was dominated by American Walter Hagen. He was the only player in the 20th century to win the same major in four consecutive years, from 1924-27. |
