![]() A Brief History Of The US Open America's national golf championship was born of humble origins. The organization that later became the current U.S. Golf Association was formed in 1894 and decided to run a national amateur championship, and the US Open. The first US Open was held in 1895 on the nine-hole course of Newport Golf and Country Club. But it wasn't until 1913 that the US Open took off and escaped the shadow of the more prestigious US Amateur championship. It took a stunning win by Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old American amateur, to raise the tournament's profile. He beat famous English professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in a play-off. And afterwards the US Open evolved into America's most important golf event. The championship's popularity was also boosted by Georgia amateur Bobby Jones, who won the US Open four times - 1923, 1926, 1929, 1930. In 1922 spectator tickets were introduced for the first time. Two years later, there were so many players seeking entry to the tournament that qualifying rounds were introduced. In 1954, the US Open course was roped from tee to green for the first time. That year also marked the first national television coverage as everyone wanted to see the action! Looking at the list of names who have won the US Open you see the likes of Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. And in recent years the event has been won by the modern giants of the game: Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and the late Payne Stewart. It is a measure of how hard it is to win a US Open, that it is said 72 pars can be enough to take the prize. |
