![]() A Brief History Of King's Stand Stakes The King's Stand Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds run over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres) at Ascot Racecourse during the Royal Ascot meeting in June. Initially named the Stand Plate in 1837, it went on to be called the Royal Stand Plate and the Queen's Plate before taking its present name in 1901. It gained Group 1 status for a second time in 2008, having previously been classed at this level from 1973 until downgrading to Group 2 in 1988. The race is now the third leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, preceded by the Australia Stakes (to be replaced in 2007 by the Newmarket Handicap), and followed by the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
